Here's how to get help
Make an appointment with one of our sleep
specialists
- We invite you or your primary care physician to call us for an appointment.
- You may wish to bring your sleep partner, who may well know more about
your sleep than you do.
Receive an evaluation
- During your visit, your sleep specialist will talk with you about
your symptoms and will perform a physical examination to help determine
the underlying cause(s) of your symptoms.
You may need a sleep study
- Whether you need a sleep study depends on your symptoms. If you do
need one, you will spend the night at the Sleep Center for this special
test.
Your diagnosis
- The sleep specialist will evaluate the results of your office visit,
your overnight study, and other pertinent information to arrive at a
diagnosis.
Treatment procedures
- Treatment depends on your diagnosis. Potential treatments for your
particular situation will be discussed with you in detail.
What happens during a sleep study?
Your study involves sleeping overnight in your own private room at the Sleep
Center. Information about your sleep patterns is gathered from a variety
of sources, including electrodes placed on your head, face and chin, and
thin, pressure-sensitive belts fastened around your chest and waist. This
is a completely painless study; no needles are used. All wires are attached
either with tape and paste or elastic belts. The sleep study is usually
completed by morning, or it may last throughout the next day, depending
on the information that the doctor feels is needed. We
treat all sleep disorders, including the following:
Sleep Apnea and Snoring
People with sleep apnea have trouble breathing during sleep; it is a surprisingly
common, under-recognized disorder. They don't get enough oxygen during sleep
because of collapse of their airway and their sleep is subsequently poor.
Loud snoring and sleepiness are the most common symptoms; untreated sleep
apnea may lead to an increased risk for high blood pressure and heart disease.
Narcolepsy
The main symptoms of this central nervous system based disorder are excessive
daytime drowsiness and a tendency to sleep at inappropriate times. Other
symptoms might include episodes of muscle weakness, vivid hallucinations,
and paralysis while falling asleep or awakening.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
This disorder involves sudden, uncontrollable leg jerking occurring during
sleep. People are often not aware of this leg and arm jerking, which may
lead to sleep disruption and daytime sleepiness. Many patients with restless
leg syndrome have these involuntary movements during sleep.
Insomnia
Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep disturbs a person during waking
hours as well as during their sleeping hours. Difficulty staying awake
and concentrating on tasks are both common after a poor night’s
sleep.
